I've visited the websites of the sponsers... LOTS of nice wood.... what am I looking for in regards to archtop wood? In Benedetto's book, he's got two "wedges" of wood glued together to make the top.. As you can probably tell... I'm not up on the wood working lingo yet.... I'm going to need someone to take my hand and walk me through this... I'm looking to buy the raw material (cut but not carved) for the top, sides, neck.... and i guess fingerboard... I don't know what though.... |

archtop wood is sold in two different forms-wedges and planks. The wedges are just that-wedge shaped pieces of bookmatched lumber roughly 1-1/4" or more in the center and around 1/2" on the edge. This wedge shape can help when it comes to carving because there is less material to remove since the wedge approximates some of the arch shape. Planks are rectangular boards usually an inch thick,you can use thinner if your arch is less. |
